Thirty-five-year-old Costa Mesa woman arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run after allegedly hitting woman in crosswalk

On Monday, Jan. 22, at 12:14 a.m., the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD) was notified of a traffic collision in the area of 20th Street and W. Balboa Boulevard on the Newport Peninsula.

Officers arrived on scene and found a female pedestrian within traffic lanes suffering from major injuries. The suspect, in a vehicle, fled the location. Initial investigation found that the female victim was crossing legally within a marked crosswalk when the suspect vehicle failed to yield, collided with the pedestrian and immediately drove away.

The suspect vehicle is described as a silver Mercedes-Benz convertible.

Through investigative leads, the Traffic Division contacted a suspect, who was ultimately arrested and booked into the Orange County Jail for felony hit and run. Arrested was Sarah Anne Kone, 35, of Costa Mesa.

The case is still under investigation as information continues to come in to the NBPD.

The NBPD is committed to providing the best possible police services, and is seeking help from witnesses to the collision or anyone who can assist with additional information about the incident. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Traffic Investigator Austin Laverty at 949.644.3747, or alaverty@nbpd.org.
