Take Five: David Hoffman and his team reimagine iconic space

Bringing more than 30 years of luxury hospitality experience with him, David Hoffman took over as general manager of Pendry Newport Beach in January 2023, prior to its opening.

Hoffman, a long-time member of the Montage International family, joined the company in 2003 and is marking his 21st anniversary this year. He also opened several Montage Hotels & Resorts properties including Montage Kapalua Bay, Montage Beverly Hills and Montage Laguna Beach.

Now that Hoffman has been at the helm of Pendry Newport Beach for more than a year, Stu News was curious to find out what’s been happening since it opened in September 2023 and what guests can look forward to when they visit the property.

Q: Now that you have been onboard for a while, how’s it going?

A: I could not be more proud of the team’s performance in opening Pendry Newport Beach and The Elwood Club. This building is iconic to the area and the community was excited for the doors to reopen with a reimagined concept, which has been so well received.  We have enjoyed embracing our community and meeting so many incredible people who have supported us in our efforts, and these relationships will continue to grow through the memories we will create together.

Q: What does the job entail?

A: We are in the business of hospitality, and I continue to remind the team to find ways to make emotional connections with everyone that walks through the doors by creating memories that will last forever. Importantly, this does not stop with our guests and members.  The team should always be finding ways to enrich the lives of their co-workers as well because the most productive team is the team that enjoys their work and each other.

Q: Does the position meet your expectations? Have there been any surprises in assuming the position?

A: The position has not only met my expectations but exceeded them in every way. Having worked at the property 21 years ago and having such fond memories of my time here, I was thrilled to be returning to a space that was completely reimagined with the task of bringing it to life. The support of the Eagle Four team, along with the collaborative vision of Montage International, I have no doubt that the community will continue to enjoy Pendry Newport Beach for years to come.

Q: How has your background led you to this property and position?

A: I am lucky enough to have called Montage International my home for the past 21 years having opened Montage Laguna Beach in 2003, followed by several other Montage and Pendry properties.  Understanding both brands has proven instrumental in making certain the quality of associates, level of service and commitment to the overall success of the property is always top of mind. My hope is that I successfully translate that to the team who will lead the way in these efforts daily.

Q: What new programs, events and concepts do you have planned for the Pendry?

A: There is so much that is new to the property from the addition of a 4,700-square-foot event lawn to a remodeled pool area to the addition of some one-of-a-kind food and beverage offerings such as SET Steak & Sushi, Tree Shack and Bar Pendry. But what I am most excited about is bringing to life The Elwood Club, which is a new concept for the brand. The Elwood Club is a private members club within the hotel that allows members to enjoy year-round programming in their private outlets inclusive of Italian dining at Viamara, live music and other performances at The Cabaret and casual fare in the Pub inclusive of a Golf Simulation room.  As a member, you also have access to all that the hotel has to offer such as the pool, fitness center, Children’s Paintbox program, and food and beverage offerings. We have found so much joy in getting to know our members, and I look forward to continuing to grow those relationships over the years.
