Police arrest suspect for assault with a deadly weapon, dogs, following multi-hour confrontation

Newport Beach Police responded to a call for domestic violence on Wednesday evening (Jan. 10) around 6:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of Nautilus Lane. Upon arrival, police said the suspect refused to exit.

Additional units were called and a helicopter circled overhead. At one point, the suspect released dogs on the police forcing an officer to defend himself by firing shots and wounding one of the advancing animals.

Eventually, the suspect, Kevin Mescher, 44, was arrested at 1:43 a.m. early Thursday morning, some seven hours after the initial call. He was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon on peace officers and resisting the officers.

The bail amount was set at $50,000.
