Older NB resident seemingly sucker-punched on Coast Highway while out on a walk, suspect arrested

On Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 12:09 p.m., Newport Beach Police officers responded to a call of an unconscious male on the sidewalk in the area of East Coast Highway and Pelican Point Drive.

Upon arriving on scene, it was determined a male Newport Beach resident in his late 60s had been punched on the side of the head from behind by another unknown male. The victim was transported to a local hospital with a laceration to his head.

NBPD quickly identified and located a suspect, who then reportedly attempted to flee officers. Steven Soliz was apprehended and arrested without incident.

Soliz, a 28-year-old Santa Ana resident, was arrested on suspicion for felony battery with serious bodily injury, elder abuse, for being under the influence of a narcotic and for obstructing a police officer.

Bail was set at $25,000.

There was no known motive.
