June 1-7 is National Gun Storage Check Week. During this week, the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD) urges residents to “Make Sure It’s Secure.” The inaugural observance of National Gun Storage Check Week was convened by the NSSF – the Firearm Industry Trade Association with the goal to encourage all gun owners to check their firearm storage and practices and, if necessary, take action to prevent unwanted access.

Proper gun storage helps prevent accidents, especially in homes with children or unauthorized individuals. Secure storage reduces the risk of firearms being stolen and potentially used in crimes. As a gun owner, it’s your duty to ensure your firearms are stored safely and responsibly.

Take the time to check your current gun storage practices. Are your firearms securely locked away? Are your locks and safes in good condition? If your storage solutions are outdated or insufficient, consider upgrading to more secure options. Many secure storage options are available, including lock boxes, cable locks and full-size safes, to secure firearms when not in use in homes and vehicles. When firearms are not under your direct control or being carried on your person, it’s best to place them in locked storage. Fast-opening lock boxes are a good solution for firearms kept for home security.

“Securely storing guns when they’re not in use can save lives. It’s really that simple,” said Joe Bartozzi, president and CEO of NSSF. “No one wants their gun in the hands of an unsupervised child, a person in crisis, someone who does not understand how to safely operate firearms, or a thief. If something bad happens because your gun isn’t stored securely, you’ll regret it, probably forever.”
