Junior Lifeguard Headquarters building grand opening set for June 12, junior guard program kicks off June 18

The grand opening of the long-anticipated Junior Lifeguard Headquarters building will be feted with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, June 12 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The event will include speeches from Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill, the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard (NBJG) Foundation and NBJG Founder Reenie Boyer.

Food will be available for purchase and giveaways will be available for the first 500 people.

The completion of the building marks a new era for the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program, which was previously operated out of a trailer, and now averages 1,400 participants annually.

The Junior Lifeguard Headquarters building is located at 901 E. Ocean Front, Newport Beach.

Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards at a past opening day

The 2024 Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program (NBJG) kicks off on Tuesday, June 18. The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is a seven-week ocean-based program for youth ages 9-15. It focuses on educating participants to recognize potential hazardous conditions associated with an ever-changing aquatic environment, along with building swimming skills, physical fitness, beach safety awareness and teaching the role of ocean lifeguards. This year, the NBJG Program is celebrating 40 years of beach safety and ocean education.

The staff is excited to jump into summer with 1,450 participants signed up for this year’s program. Opening day is filled with nerves and excitement as JGs meet their instructors, find out their groups and jump into exciting summer. The program runs through August 1. The morning session runs from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and the afternoon session runs from 1-4 p.m.
