Community invited to important online housing workshop

The City will be seeking input from the community on the future of housing in Newport Beach at an interactive, virtual workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 6-7:30 p.m.

The workshop, “Envisioning the Future of Housing,” is the first in a series of community forums that will help update the housing and circulation (transportation and mobility) portions of Newport Beach’s General Plan.

Earlier this year, the City was informed that it must plan for an additional 4,834 housing units over the next decade to comply with legal requirements of the Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA). This workshop will gather input on how best to integrate future housing units into the city.

The virtual workshop will include surveys, polling, live discussion and other activities to engage Newport Beach residents in the General Plan process. The October 20 workshop will focus on housing, to be followed by a circulation workshop later this year.

The General Plan update effort builds on the broader “Newport, Together” community outreach conducted in fall 2019. The General Plan’s Housing Element details the City’s strategy for enhancing and preserving community character and identifies strategies for additional housing. The Circulation Element guides how people move through the City through various forms of transportation.
