2020/21 School Year Start

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District has confirmed Monday, Aug. 24 as the start of the 2020-21 school year. The District continues to work with the challenges of reopening schools due to coronavirus issues and has noted that guidance is being developed at the national, state and county levels.

Math Curriculum

High school math instructional materials have been presented for community review prior to adoption. According to NMUSD the textbooks have been certified as being aligned with State Board of Education adopted content Standards

The Illustrative Mathematics (IM) high school materials are available through three IM certified publishers.

According to the District website, “IM Certified curricula are rich, engaging core programs built around focus, coherence, and rigor. The curricula are trusted, expert-authored materials developed to equip all students to thrive in mathematics.

“IM Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 are problem-based core curricula rooted in content and practice standards to foster learning and achievement for all. Students learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language.

“IM Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2 lessons are designed with a focus on independent, group, and whole-class instruction, building mathematical understanding and fluency with all students.”

The review of the materials will close on Monday, June 8 at 5 p.m.
