NMUSD begins Distance Learning rollout

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) began a two-day Distance Learning: Student & Parent Orientation yesterday. The program offers a checklist for parents of things that they can do to make certain that their children have access to the District’s Distance Learning opportunities.

The checklist noted that school principals would be making plans for student pick-up of Chromebooks for those who did not have available devices at home. The schools are staggering those pick-up times to be consistent with social distancing requirements.

Once the students and parents have established log-in connections, teachers will be asked to connect with their students and families. The platform called Zoom will then allow teachers to meet “virtually in an online environment with students and parents.”

Through the Zoom platform, teaching will take place in the Google Classroom utilizing a number of other platforms including, Seesaw and Remind.

Parents will be asked through the process to support their children by staying up with the online expectations, including establishing routines and expectations for students, monitoring communications between students and teachers, and encouraging things like stress reduction and physical exercise.

Teachers, students and parents will also be able to communicate virtually during “Office Hours” on Zoom.

NMUSD has announced a closure due to the COVID-19 issue through April 3, then followed by a week off for Spring Break. Those dates are subject to change. Yesterday, the Los Angeles Unified School District announced that they would now be closed until May 1.

Expectations are that other districts could shortly be following suit.
