Fair Game

By TOM JOHNSON

King tides roll in this weekend, but the City seems to have them under control

Fair Game Tom NewAre you concerned about King Tides this weekend? I’m told just relax by City of Newport Utilities Director Mark Vukojevic

He says, “The overages on the tides have been reasonable so far. No rain (at) this time, so we will have only a few extra crews coming in to pump seepage coming through the walls, streets and pipes.

“The highest times are Friday – 6.6 feet at 8:09 a.m., Saturday – 6.7 feet at 8:51 a.m. and Sunday – 6.6 feet at 9:34 a.m.”

Mark runs a good shop and the city is in good hands with him at the helm.

There’s a new barbershop in town and it’s located in a space you probably wouldn’t expect, next to The Spa in the Fashion Island Hotel. It’s a modern one-chair “retreat.”

They’re making it easy and enjoyable. Clients can receive complimentary valet or self-parking, plus the enjoyment of a variety of beverages and a gratis shoeshine. That means free. Lunch can even be pre-ordered to pick up following your appointment.

The barber is Shea Trettewick who is skilled in all hair types. He’ll even finish things off with a soothing, relaxing old-style hot towel shave, if so desired.

Figure about 35-45 minutes and $45 (does not include the gratuity). It’s another $45 for the shave. Call for an appointment at 949.760.4992.

Last month, State Assembly candidate Diane Dixon filed paperwork requesting that she be listed on the March primary ballot as “Mayor/Orange County Businesswoman.” After reviewing candidates’ requested designations, the California Secretary of State’s office announced that Dixon would be listed only as “Mayor” on the ballot.

Dixon is running against incumbent Cottie Petrie-Norris for the 74th Assembly District.

Derek Humphrey from the Norris camp said, “It’s unusual for the Secretary of State’s office to refuse to allow someone to run as a businessman or businesswoman because the bar is actually rather low for those titles.”

The date of the California primary is Tuesday, March 3.

In just about three weeks, professional tennis returns to Newport Beach with the Oracle Challenger Series’ Road to Indian Wells at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Bianca Andreescu played and won last year. She then went on to win the U.S. Open.

Yesterday, the field for 2020 was announced and here are some of the names of those entered: CoCo Vandeweghe, a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist; four-time ATP winner Steve Johnson; former World No. 5 Eugenie Bouchard; and 2019 Oracle Challenger Series champions Tommy Paul and Marcos Giron.

The dates of play are January 27 through February 2.

There’s a guy named Mancil Davis that is recognized as the all-time record holder for career hole-in-ones on the golf course with 51.

Tiger Woods has 20, including his first at 6 years old. Jack Nicklaus also has 20, with only three coming in official PGA events.

Well, not that I’d put Bill Pierpoint, a longtime friend and Newport Beach resident, in the same rarified air as Woods and Nicklaus, but he did finally join the club with his first hole-in-one Wednesday of this week, after years and years of playing the game.

Playing the third hole at Strawberry Farms with his regular men’s business group, Bill knocked in a three-iron from 173 yards.

Poor Linda, his wife, I can only imagine how many times she’s had to listen to the story since then over the last several days.

Anyway, congrats my friend.
