NBPLF embraces #Giving Tuesday

The Newport Beach Public Library Foundation (NBPLF) is excited to participate in #GivingTuesday on Tuesday, Dec. 3. This global day of giving harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners – charities, families, businesses and individuals – to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to kick off the holiday giving season and to inspire people to give back.

Millions of people around the world have participated in the movement. In asking three of our local community members as to why they give to the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation, here’s what they said:

Polly and Mike Smith: “There are many opportunities to support the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation. The reward is seeing how it benefits so many neighbors. Six years ago, we met with a few members of the board in the office of the late Dr. Roger Steinert, the distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology and Founder of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at UCI. That meeting launched Medicine in our Backyard, enlisting specialists on the Faculty of UCI to communicate the latest information on various medical issues. Think of it as consultations with leaders in their field: UCI professors who train future doctors. It has been successful beyond our expectations, and we have been grateful to sustain the program with our annual gift, along with the contribution from UCI. Our reward: seeing those seats fill up each month. The Witte lectures and the Literacy Program are also two of our favorites among the many unique library programs made available to our community. Step up and join the Foundation Family. You’ll be glad you did.”

Loren Blackwood: “It has been truly remarkable for me to serve on the Library Live Committee and to support it with my financial gifts. Library Live, which brings recognized authors and innovators to us several times a year, is one of the many opportunities to improve the future of our community offered by the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation. In turn, I receive so much more. Over the years, I have used the resources at the Library to support scholarly research while attending University California Irvine for a bachelor’s in Art History. Now, I’m attending Orange Coast College for a certificate in Apparel Industry Sustainability. I utilize the many online resources supported by the Foundation that offer essential data related to this business. The Foundation and the Newport Beach Public Library work together to provide a welcoming space and one of the greatest gifts of all, knowledge for all.”

Kevin Barlow, Miracle Mile Advisors of Newport Beach and NBPL Foundation Secretary/Treasurer: “Kelly and I give to the Newport Beach Library Foundation because of the work done by the Foundation to support the Library through financial contributions and community programming. The library stands as a center of the community focused on the public good, accessible to all. The core values of the library and those that support it align with our personal values: Excellence in education, community, access, diversity of thought and pursuit of knowledge. Our children, Kate (6) and Knox (3), have benefited greatly from the resources provided by the Library and love to visit. We enjoy seeing them excited to read and learn. We feel a desire to give back, so other children can continue to have those experiences.”

The NBPL Foundation, decided to participate in #GivingTuesday because, since this program was founded in 2012, it has inspired millions of people to give back and support the local causes they believe in. More than $400 million was raised online in 2018 to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations, and much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing and acts of kindness. “It’s been a privilege to work with remarkable leaders all over the country building a movement around GivingTuesday,” said Asha Curran, GivingTuesday’s CEO and co-founder. “This initiative has truly been crowd-sourced by some of the smartest and most connected minds among the next generation of philanthropists and entrepreneurs.”

By supporting the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation on #GivingTuesday, the community helps make our Library happen every day and for everyone. A gift to the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation helps ensure that the pursuit of an independent, life-long education remains accessible in our community. NBPL Foundation CEO Meg Linton believes “Education and literacy for all, empowers us all!” To make a year-end gift, renew a membership, or join the Library Foundation for the first time on #GivingTuesday or any time the inspiration hits, visit www.nbplfoundation.org, or call 949.717.3892.
