NBPD Citizens’ Police Academy holds graduation of Class 50

On Wednesday, Nov. 15, the Newport Beach Police Department held graduation ceremonies for the Fall 2023 Citizens’ Police Academy Class at Marina Park Community Center. The program began with welcoming remarks from NBPD Lt. Brad Miller (academy executive officer), followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. A video presentation by Jennifer Manzella, assistant to the Chief of Police and academy program coordinator, provided highlights of the 12-week class. Keynote speakers included City Councilmember Robyn Grant and NBPD Chief of Police Joe Cartwright. Three class representatives shared their sentiments about the academy and their experiences, followed by the conferring of diplomas on the 34 graduates (Class 50).

Congratulations to the Fall 2023 Citizens’ Police Academy Class

The academy staff included: NBPD Lt. Brad Miller, executive officer; NBPD Sgt. Steve Oberon, community relations sergeant; Assistant to the NBPD Chief of Police Jennifer Manzella, program coordinator and Volunteer Judy Johnson, program volunteer.

The academy gives students a better understanding of how the NBPD is organized, the services they provide, and how they serve the community, it is not based on a traditional police academy. The program is not designed to prepare students to be police officers or provide training in the field of law enforcement.

Instructors are drawn from all areas in the NBPD. Students meet the chief of police, managers, supervisors, patrol officers, detectives, dispatchers and other department employees. They encourage students to ask questions and express their concerns about pertinent issues. A major goal of the Citizens’ Police Academy is to increase understanding between community citizens and the Police Department, and to enhance the strong relationships the NBPD has with the community.

The next NBPD Citizens’ Police Academy (Class 51) is scheduled to begin on March 13, 2024. For more information about the academy, the application process and to obtain an application, go here.
