Michael Sciacca named NMUSD director of teaching and learning, secondary

Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) has announced the selection of Dr. Michael Sciacca as director of teaching and learning, secondary.

Dr. Sciacca has been with NMUSD for more than 15 years, serving as a teacher, Career Technical Education teacher on special assignment, assistant principal, principal and for the past year as the principal for Cloud Campus. 

During his tenure at Cloud Campus, Dr. Sciacca spearheaded the development of the newly created kindergarten through 12th grade virtual school. He has been instrumental in building systems and structures to support the virtual learning of more than 1,700 students.

Known for supporting students beyond the educational program, Dr. Sciacca cultivates positive school culture and implements sustainable programs, such as Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports and restorative practices. He also spearheaded programs for English learners to have access to and succeed in high-quality, rigorous instruction. He prioritizes staff development for teachers to collaborate, build curriculum and share instructional strategies.

While principal of Ensign Intermediate, Dr. Sciacca was known for tirelessly promoting the success of all students. His leadership and consistent collaboration with staff, parents and school community groups allowed for many student successes. One example of this is the school’s consistent increase in English Language Arts and Mathematics Smarter Balanced Assessment scores through his tenure.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Sciacca in this role,” said Superintendent Russell Lee-Sung. “He is a proven leader that values collaboration and systems that lead to a high-quality instructional program for all students,” he said.

Dr. Sciacca has had many successes during his tenure with NMUSD, including being named the 2020 Orange County Association of School Administrators (ACSA) Site Administrator of the Year in recognition of his commitment to educational equality and student achievement, exceptional leadership and contributions to the profession. 

He received his Bachelor of Arts in Media Arts from the University of Arizona; Master of Fine Arts from Chapman University; and his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from John Hopkins University.
