Former mayor busted on suspicion of DUI

Former Costa Mesa Mayor Gary Monahan, 61, of Costa Mesa, was arrested at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 3 for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The arrest took place in the 400 block of Old Newport Blvd.

The arrest included an additional charge of having a prior arrest for DUI. That former incident occurred on November 26, 2018, when Monahan was arrested on suspicion of DUI hit-and-run outside of the restaurant he owned on Newport Blvd. in Costa Mesa. The restaurant, Skosh Monahan’s, closed in April of 2019.

Monahan was a multi-term city councilman and mayor for the city of Costa Mesa.

His bail was set at $10,000.

NBPD capture burglary suspect following several alleged unsuccessful attempts on Kings Road

Newport Beach Police arrested 21-year-old Jacob Walter Mifsud, of Encino, at 3:28 p.m. on Saturday, June 5 in the 1300 block of Kings Road following a residential burglary.

Mifsud was apprehended following several alleged attempts at forced entry burglaries.

NBPD arrested Mifsud on two counts of residential burglary and for allegedly attempting to commit a felony crime.

His bail was set at $50,000.

Suspect scared off after finding resident in the home

A residential burglary occurred in the Mariners Community around 9:15 p.m. on Friday, June 4. While the victim was getting ready for bed in their residence on Westcliff Drive, an unknown suspect accessed the back yard by climbing over a wall from an adjacent property.

Once inside the yard, the suspect pried open a sliding glass door and entered the house. The suspect cracked open the bedroom door where the victim was about to go to sleep. Upon realizing the home was occupied, the suspect fled the scene.

The victim then called the Newport Beach Police.

No loss was reported, and no suspect information was available.
