Police Files

Burglary suspect allegedly enters home and encounters resident, leaves and is later arrested

A residential burglary reportedly occurred on Wednesday, Feb. 10 around 11:30 p.m. in the Santa Ana Heights community.

According to reports, a suspect entered the residence in the 20400 block of Santa Ana Avenue through an unlocked front door and went upstairs. One of the victims was upstairs watching television and heard the suspect in the hallway. The victim confronted the suspect who reportedly claimed he thought he was in his friend’s house.

The suspect then reportedly left the scene and the police were not contacted at this time.

About five hours later, Costa Mesa Police (CMPD) received a call of a suspicious person trying door handles of homes and vehicles in the area. CMPD stopped the suspect and found property from the previous victim’s home in his possession.

Newport Beach Police were then notified of the alleged burglary at that time and took the suspect into custody.

The victim ultimately reported losses of clothing, a wallet and a cell phone, all of which was recovered.

Arrested was DeVaughn Claude Hanley, an unemployed 27-year-old from Santa Ana, who was charged with residential burglary with no forced entry. His bail was set at $50,000.

Editor’s Note: An arrest contains allegations that a suspect has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
