Fourteen-year-old struck in fatal traffic collision on Balboa Peninsula

On Saturday, May 25 at 6:47 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department (NBPD) dispatch center received a call regarding a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision in the area of Balboa Boulevard and Palm Street. Newport Beach Police Officers and Fire personnel responded and tragically, the 14-year-old female pedestrian was pronounced deceased on scene. The identity of the decedent is not being released at this time.

The driver of the vehicle was at the scene and contacted by officers.

The NBPD Major Accident Investigation Team responded to the scene to conduct an extensive and thorough investigation. It was determined that alcohol appeared to be a factor.

The driver of the vehicle, Joseph Alcazar, was arrested on suspicion of 187(a) PC – Homicide: Traffic Fatality and 273A(a) PC – Cruelty to Child. Alcazar is a 30-year-old male Hispanic residing in Fontana, Calif.

Traffic was closed Eastbound Balboa Street at Westbound Palm Street at 7:32 pm. on Saturday, May 25 and reopened at 2:35 a.m. on Sunday, May 26.
