Early morning Arizona shooting takes life of former CdMHS student-athlete Erin Jones

Last Sunday (April 28) brought extremely sad news to Newport Beach. Former Corona del Mar student-athlete and now University of Arizona student Erin Jones, 20, was reportedly killed in an early morning shooting outside of a residence at 1:40 a.m. in Tucson, Ariz.

Tucson Police responded to several 9-1-1 calls reporting an alleged shooting near the U of A campus, locating Jones upon arrival with obvious signs of gunshot trauma outside of a residence. Officers immediately began rendering aid until personnel from the Tucson Fire Department (TFD) arrived and transported her to Banner University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, she was reportedly pronounced deceased.

As police began investigating the shooting scene, a vehicle with an additional adult female victim was reportedly located nearby. Officers rendered aid until personnel from TFD transported her to St. Joseph’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two additional victims, a teen female and an adult male, reportedly were also treated for non-life-threatening gunshot trauma.

Detectives from Tucson PD’s Homicide Unit, Aggravated Assault Unit, and Gun Crime Reduction/Group Violence Unit were contacted and responded to the scene to continue the investigation.

Police reportedly found that Jones and several other U of A students were among those attending a large party at the nearby residence before the shooting took place.

Jones graduated from CdMHS in 2022 and was known as a very talented and well-liked member of the girls soccer program, playing all four years and receiving All-League and All-CIF-SS honors.

Reports say she was outside the residence awaiting an Uber when the shooting occurred.

Police continue to investigate, and no arrests have yet been made.
