40th Annual Spirit Run, with the luck of the Irish, announces race results

The 40th Annual Spirit Run, which took place on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17, was a fantastic day of fitness, community and fun. The luck of the Irish brought perfect running weather and no rain with partly sunny skies.

Spirit Run truly appreciated the financial backing of the City of Newport Beach as well as its Corporate, Media, Elite and Family Sponsors. Mammoth Track Elite Athlete Stevie Lawrence breaks finish tape in Adult 5k

Also cherished was the enthusiastic participation of the City of Newport Beach. California Assemblymember and former Newport Beach Mayor Diane Dixon, Councilmember Robyn Grant and Chief Lifeguard Brian O’Rourke, who were race starters for the Adult 5k, Dog Mile and Youth Mile, respectively. Councilmember Grant presented awards to winning human/dog duos in the Dog Mile, and Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commissioners Dave Granoff, Heather Ignatin, Keira Kirby and former Commissioner Laird Hayes judged the St. Patrick’s-themed costume contest. City expo presence included Camp Newport’s booth hosted by Recreation & Senior Services Director Sean Levin, Deputy Director Justin Schmillen and their team comprised of Brian Cordeiro, Molly Patience and Madeleine Gallardo. The Newport Beach Lifeguards’ booth was presented by Lifeguard Training Captain Gary Conwell.

Between the running and walking events, participants and spectators visited the Youth and Fitness Expo. They enjoyed delicious food and beverages from Spirit Run’s food truck, while listening to the sounds of the Corona del Mar High School Jazz Band. The expo featured bumper cars, rock climbing and other youth activities, massage and health and fitness information for adults, and much more.

Newport Beach resident and Elite Sponsor Vivien Hyman breaks finish tape in the Masters Mile

Participants donned their free Irish-themed decorative eyeglasses and headpieces. Adults took home coupons for free appetizers at Muldoon’s and a .40 beer at Malarky’s. Children, families, adults and human dog duos competed in the St. Patrick’s-themed costume contest. The lucky adult winners won Malarky’s sweatshirts and hats; while kids and families received movie tickets to the Lot and Regal Cinema swag.

Race Winners

Every participant was a winner at Spirit Run. Each adult, child and canine received a Spirit Run medal as they crossed the finish line.

Spirit Run recognized its most competitive participants with a $5,100 cash prize purse, and more than 100 non-cash prizes, all donated by sponsors. During the awards presentations, many of the winners were greeted by, and were photographed with, America’s Premier Miler Steve Scott. Scott is a multiple-time Olympian and holds the World Record for completing the most sub-4-minute miles (137 times). Below is a listing of those who were honored at the Awards Presentations.
