13th Annual 4th of July is for Families offered a day of sparkling celebration

The 13th Annual 4th of July is for Families – Newport Peninsula Bike Parade and Community Festival – began at 9 a.m. at 36th Street Park and headed down Balboa Boulevard to Channel Place Park, ending at a free festival including carnival games, face painting, bounce houses, arts & crafts, lawn games and music, along with breakfast burritos for sale from Chronic Tacos and Starbucks coffee.

Mayor O’Neill welcomes community members to the festivities

Participants showed off their best red, white and blue gear, and were encouraged to decorate their bikes, scooters, wagons and strollers, and bring their leashed pooches.

Everybody loves a parade!

Opening ceremonies, which began at 9:20 a.m., were led by Recreation and Sr. Services Deputy Director Justin Schmillen, who introduced Newport Beach Mayor Will O’Neill, who in turn, welcomed the community. The Flag Salute was led by NBPD Chief Joe Cartwright. In addition, other city dignitaries in attendance included City Manager Grace Leung, NBFD Chief Jeff Boyles, Councilmember Robyn Grant and Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Steve Rosansky.

The National Anthem was sung acapella by Jesse Rae O’Conner, a 14-year-old Newport Beach resident. Along with helping out at her family’s local doggie daycare and boarding business, O’Connor is focusing on her singing and songwriting, often posting covers and originals on her YouTube channel.

In addition, sponsors and volunteers were recognized, and prizes were handed out for outstanding Independence Day attire.
